ギャンブルの町リノから100マイル離れたネバダ州北部の荒野に、ブラックロック砂漠として知られる広大な敵対的平原がある。この地域は、過去10,000年の大半の間、何もない、風の吹きさらしの乾燥した湖底であった。ただし、毎年夏の終わりの1週間だけ、不毛の土地から臨時の都市が出現する。 
 
これがバーニングマンの超現実的で驚くべき場所である。太陽に焼かれ、砂塵で目がくらむこの集会は、一時的なコミュニティ、精神的冒険、パフォーマンス・ステージ、砂漠のレイブ、社会実験など、人によってさまざまな意味を持つ。また、機械化された火を噴くタコ、高さ15メートルの木造神殿、そしてイベント終了時に燃え上がる骸骨の彫刻など、これまでに作られた中で最も注目に値するサイトスペシフィックな野外アートのインキュベーターでもある。 
 
ここでは、作家であり写真家でもあるNKガイが、16年間のバーニングマンアートを紹介する。彼のまばゆいばかりのイメージは、参加型、集団型、本質的に儚い砂漠でのインスタレーションやハプニングを記録している。その結果は、主流文化のエゴ、商業、権力闘争をはるかに超えた領域への証言であり、現代における最も純粋で、奔放な、表現の中心のひとつである。
